Knysna Oyster Festival
Where mollusc lovers gather
It’s that time of year again, when the mollusc lovers gather for a week in the charming town of Knysna on South Africa’s Garden Route to sample some of the best bivalves in town.
These salt-water sensations have quite the reputation and tend to inspire strong feelings. But love them or hate them, these culinary curiosities are actually very healthy as they are full of zinc, which is great for retaining energy levels, as well as boosting your immune system. They’re also a dining experience in themselves. Whether you want to knock them back with a dash of lemon and Tobasco®, or try some more creative recipes, a lot of the fun comes from pairing them with champagne and just revelling in the decadence.
So, if you have a penchant for expensive food and beautiful destinations, here’s some of the key information about this year’s festival.
2017 Knysna Oyster Festival Dates
This premium lifestyle festival will be held from 7th to 16h July. This is winter in the Western Cape, but don’t let that put you off because oysters actually taste better in the winter. Not only for practical reasons - as they can be kept fresher in cooler climes - but also because they really thrive when the water is chilly.
The 12th Knysna Wine Festival will also be part of the programme of events, as well as cycle tours, trail runs, live music, travelling theatre, and even a whisky and jazz cruise.
Various restaurants, cafes and lodges in Knysna will be serving up plates of these delicacies, so it’s the perfect excuse to check out all the hotspots in this corner of the continent.
On one of the days, you could head to the Lakeside Lodge & Spa to enjoy an oyster experience on the Swartvlei Lake, which includes six large cultivated oysters, a pontoon cruise and a wine tasting. Another day, you could pay a visit to Cruise Cafe if you like the sound of a rooibos and thyme smoked oyster - in a soya sauce, sesame oil and spring onion dressing - with gingered cream cheese. With so much on offer, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Where to stay
