Any luxury travel expert will tell you that a trip along the wine routes of the Western Cape are amongst the top picks for all repeat travellers. But what few know, is how to experience these epic destinations in unique and memory-filled ways. Having a gourmet picnic is one of those ways… from winelands and forests to beaches and parks, there is no shortage of magnificent places to picnic in the Cape.

Nothing says “Summertime and the living is easy” quite like an alfresco meal. Fortunately the Stellenbosch wine country is blessed with a dreamy climate and stunning natural beauty, which means we’re never far from a beautiful place to enjoy an outdoor feast.

The thrill of unwrapping lovingly packed sandwiches and other tasty nibbles, and cracking open a cold beer, homemade lemonade or a glass of wine, while relaxing under a tree by a river is the stuff that memories are made of.

The lush gardens at the heart of the illustrious Babylonstoren wine farm is where you’ll find the elegant Greenhouse Restaurant. The farm-fresh produce is served in picnic-style wooden crates, and can be enjoyed within the restaurant itself during colder weather, or out among the olive groves and peaceful pools of the estate’s famous grounds.

Choose from the restaurant’s menu, which may vary according to availability of ingredients.

Options include:

  • Freshly baked scones served with cream
  • Pot pie served with crunchy salad
  • Farmhouse cheeses and marinated Babylonstoren olives
  • Smoked trout
  • Potato wedges
  • Jar salads
  • Homemade ginger beer and craft beer
  • A selection of Babylonstoren wines

The impressive steel-and-glass conservatory, custom-built for Babylonstoren by Serres et Ferronneries d’Antan in France brings the wow factor, and the farm-to-table practices employed at the estate’s other fine restaurant, Babel, are in full evidence here, incorporating ingredients freshly plucked from the surrounding gardens.

The Greenhouse Restaurant does not take reservations, so chat to our team today if this is something that you want included in your visit! That said, groups of 13 to 18 guests may book their place two months in advance, and larger groups are encouraged to book one of the private function venues.
