5 Unusual wine pairings in the Cape Winelands

Cheese and chocolate have been the supporting cast of wine tastings for some time. While they are indeed matches made in heaven, wine’s nuances of flavour, aromas and textures actually complement a variety of foods both sweet and savoury. We’ve gone in search of some interesting pairings to bring you five of our favourites.

Wine and cupcakes
Indulge in four decadent cupcakes, each paired with a special wine. The tasting commences with a rooibos cupcake infused with lemon and adorned with cream-cheese-and-honey icing, paired with Delheim’s fruity, unwooded Chardonnay, and concludes with a pumpkin cupcake infused with vibrant star anise, cinnamon and nutmeg, and garnished with pickled pumpkin, paired with a Pinotage.

Wine and artisanal salt
A totally unique pairing of Fleur de Cap wines and artisanal salt is on offer at Die Bergkelder. The pairing includes sulphuric volcanic salt-infused wild rice wrapped in vine leaves, paired with a sauvignon blanc. The tasting includes four more savoury eats, each paired with a different wine.

Wine and ice cream
Ice cream is a treat to be savoured all year round. And if, like the folk at
Somerbosch Wines, you add wine to the equation, you’ll have some pretty happy customers. Taste four wines paired with a corresponding wine-infused ice cream: merlot, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and Pinotage.

Wine and pizza
Café Blanc de Noir you can tuck into a pizza divided into four parts, each garnished with a special topping and paired with a premium Brenaissance wine. The biltong and fig pizza is a taste sensation paired with the Full House Bourdeaux blend, while the Queen of Hearts Merlot is complemented by a topping of caramelised onion. The café, which overlooks a serene river, is situated on Brenaissance Wine & Stud Estate on Devon Valley Road in Stellenbosch.

Wine and pancakes
On a few select days per year at Uitkyk Wine Estate, which is situated on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Paarl, you can expect to tuck into anything from a spicy, savoury Thai green curry pancake paired with chenin blanc to a dark chocolate ganache and berry compote pancake complemented by their flagship Carlonet.
