Having a window seat on a flight is exhilarating, watching huge mountains, forests and oceans shrink into patchwork patterns is an almost mystical experience. You can’t help but wonder what it is that is sitting 30 000 ft below… and now, with the help of an app, you can know exactly what’s below!

The Flyover Country app is the brainchild of Shane Loeffler, a geology student at the University of Minnesota at Duluth, and is described as a National Science Foundation funded offline mobile app for geoscience outreach and data discovery. So you know that it is jam-packed with interesting and noteworthy information.

Fliers plot their course beforehand and relevant surrounding information is downloaded onto your phone. The app saves offline maps and points of interest that reveal the locations of fossils and georeferenced Wikipedia articles so that you won’t need on-board WiFi. Your GPS will provide the current location and altitude to pinpoint a location and identify the surrounding features.

Flyover Country is not limited to the window seat of airplanes. It is also ideal for road trips, hiking, and other outdoor activities where you are interested in the surrounding landscape and possible areas of interest.

You can download Flyover Country from Google Play and on the Apple App Store.

One of the fantastic features of this app is that you can anticipate certain geographic wonders and look for them out of your window. Happy spying!
